Beautiful, playful houses of romantic design where red roses entwine around. Little saloons and shops hiding in the bouldered streets. The sun is reflected on the sea and there is always a light breeze present at kindly 24 degrees above zero. Every 100 meters an ice cream parlor and two or three cat-sized seagulls can be found.
What else is there to discover in this town?
Eckernförde is one of my favourite places to go for a seaside-swim in the summer. It actually has been my first summer holiday destination this year.
Because my brother has lived here for five years, I know this place so well by now, it feels like as if I would've been the one that has lived here all along.
Because of that I thought, I am going to share my insider tips with you so that you can enjoy your stay here perfectly.
1. Café Heldt
Café Heldt has besides their most amazing tortes the best accommodation here in Eckernförde. It is very centrally located, you are able to reach everything by foot. The best rooms are no. 4 (for 2-3 people) and no. 11 (for 2-4 people).
2. Haupt Café
The best shop for bun-lovers!
Because at Café Heldt it's all about self-catering, we go there to get some buns for breakfast and - wow - they're good! If you stay at Café Heldt it's not even a minute by foot to get there.
3. Eiscafé Veneto
If you go down the 'main shopping street' towards the beach, this ice cream parlor is the second one of the three ice cream parlours in Eckernförde. It's the best. Y'all have to try the flavour 'Himbeere Mascarpone' which means something like 'raspberry mascarpone', to die for! Italian ice cream is just simply the best.
4. Mira Mare
We are not that quick to leave Italy because now I will introduce you to the sweetest, most delicious little Italian bistro/ restaurant. It can be found where the shopping street meets the harbour. The table under the marquee with the bar stools ist the best in summer: airy, shadowy and directly next to the speaker playing mainly Spanish music (I do not know why, I expected the music to be italian :D), hyping up the vibe.
They have everything from bruscetta and salads to pizza, you won't miss a thing.
And between 12am and 3pm you'll get everything for 6,90€ only!
5. Liesegang
May I introduce: A bookshop!
I know nothing too wild but who does not need something good to read at the beach every now and then?
Besides that you'll find the most beautiful note books, calendars and cards here. Also the shop provides a lot of drawing essentials - for the artists among us.
6. Bonbonkocherei
My favourite place to be in this town.
I know that's probably not surprising.
But you definitely have to get here if you visit Eckernförde. You do not only stoke up with a lot of sugar in the shape of self-made sweets but you're also able to see how the sweets are made!
Here's to 'em calories, whoop!
7. Römer & Wein
Directly at the harbour that means at the end of the 'shopping street' this treasure can be found.
A palatine restaurant with the best grape spritzers and Tartes Flambees.
They're also known for their wine and you definitely have to order a 'trio box'!
It contains several snacks and the only thing I will say is that there is nothing more delicious!!!
8. Ostsee-Center
Who loves milkshakes? I love milkshakes.
And the best place to get extraordinary milkshakes here is the 'Ostsee-Center' which is located at the beach's beginning.
There are possibilities to sit inside and outside the center and it also contains a museum about the sea.
As to milkshakes you get one for 2.50€ and you can choose from different flavours.
My favourite is banana! And that milk froth on top - I just can‘t help it.
All of that sounds very invitingly, doesn't it?
I'd say we all know what your next travel destination will be, right?
Enjoy the last weeks of summer, I wish you all the best!
